But we wanted to avoid having someone do the writing for him, or even do too much coaching. It was important to us that our son’s essays be honest.

Brett listened to what our son wanted in a college, and suggested schools to consider that we hadn’t thought of.

Having worked in college admissions reading thousands of applications, Brett was able to talk with our son about what sorts of essays worked and what would come across as trite. But he never said anything like, “Do it this way.” Instead, he suggested general approaches to try out, ones designed to fit our son. When commenting on drafts, Brett’s focus was always on keeping the essays in our son’s voice and encouraging him to show his genuine experiences, interests, and abilities.
